DENVER -- When you're looking for a new cell phone plan do you know if you need hundreds of minutes ormaybe a family plan? All the cell phone offers can be confusing, so some people have turned to Web sites to navigate through all the company gimmicks. When people turn to the Internet for help, advice is cheap and plentiful. But is it always good advice? Consumer Champ Bill Clarke checked out four top Web sites to see what works. The first thing you need to know is that the owners of all of these Web sites are trying to sell you something so if you're looking for straight, objective answers, don't look too hard, Clarke said.
SaveOnPhones.com, for example, brags about the high marks it's gotten from ConsumerSearch.com. But SaveOnPhones said there's no Verizon service here in the Denver area, lists all the national carriers but not Denver's own Qwest and lists only one pay-as-you-go plan from Liberty. Also, there's no mention of Cricket, which is pretty popular in the metro area.Clarke gave SaveOnPhones.com a C-plus.The only thing that makes GetConnected.com any different is that it does list Qwest for wireless services. In all other respects, it's just an Internet sales site. And for that, GetConnected.com gets a C.LowerMyBills.com starts with an ad for Sprint so you know you're at a seller's Web site. And it, too, ignores Qwest and Cricket. But it has something called the Wireless Wizard that asks a lot of smart questions -- the kind that help you pick exactly the right plan.It also includes quality ratings for the wireless carriers, including the J.D. Power customer satisfaction ratings. For those two things alone, LowerMyBills.com stands out with a grade of B.LetsTalk.com topped the list. There's fewer ads, a great filter that lets you determine what's important to you and plenty of details on each program. Clarke gave LetsTalk.com a B-plus.He said it's important to remember that cell phone carriers change their promotions frequently so be sure to check for the latest prices before you sign up for a new phone. An use LetsTalk and LowerMyBill together for the best information. And if you want to buy on the Internet, either one is fine. But remember that if you have problems, there's no substitute for the smiling face at the retail counter near you.
