DENVER -- The Internet makes it possible to buy anything from groceries to a new car without ever leaving your home. It can also help you get rid of what you don't need. Consumer Champ Bill Clarke said you don't have to spend any money at all.It is a free service run by people like you and me -- people who take the garage sale concept a couple of steps further.
Sherrye Fisher just wanted to get rid of some baby clothes and toys and other stuff to free up some space in her own home. She joined an Internet group called Freecycle.Using the Internet and e-mail, freecyclers put used goods to good use."Somebody posts an offer that they have something to get rid of and someone else says, 'I want it, I need it, let me come and pick it up,'" Fisher said. The goal is to cut back on what ends up in landfills. Another freecycler, Sheila Ritter, calls it "the garage sale without the prices, and actually without the hassle, too.""I gave away an entire tree once, to be used for firewood for the winter," said Charlotte Fleharty. And sometimes freecyclers can help the very desperate, who've lost everything."We had beds, we had couches, we had a crib for the baby. We had dishes, pots, pans, food, towels, clothes, you name it," said Marci Gilbert.Fisher adds that there's also the sense of community, of doing good by doing the right thing."It doesn't matter what it is. Somebody needs it, somebody wants it," said Fisher.Freecycling has a few rules to follow. Freecyclers are a community of people all over the country so when you first sign up, you'll pick the city where you want to join. Then, you have to offer something before you can start asking for things. And those freecyclers who give things away can pick the people who receive them.To learn more go to Freecycle.org.
