DENVER -- Gov. Bill Owens wants Coloradans to help design the official state quarter, which is scheduled to be released in June 2006. First Lady Frances Owens will chair the advisory commission that will decide on the design.
"It's been five years now since the U.S. Mint began rolling out quarters to recognize each state," said Owens. "These quarters highlight what makes each state unique and, one coin at a time, they provide small lessons in American history. Now, it's Colorado's turn."
As part of the U.S. Mint's 50 State Commemorative Coin Program, a new quarter is released every 10 weeks -- in the order states were admitted to the Union. Colorado, which became a state in 1876, is this country's 38th state."Our state is blessed by natural beauty, a rich heritage and a strong spirit," said Frances Owens. "By designing the state quarter, you have the opportunity to commemorate the qualities that make Colorado special."Submissions will be accepted through May 10. All entries must be mailed separately on the submission form provided at the Colorado quarter Web site. For further information, including a form to submit a design, please visit the official Colorado quarter Web site.
