DENVER -- Want to borrow a bike for a while? Denver has loaner bikes again.
Denver B-Cycle started in last year. It's run by Denver Bike Sharing, a charitable nonprofit 501(c)3.There are dozens of B-cycle locations throughout downtown Denver, Capitol Hill, Cherry Creek and University of Denver, among other areas. To find a location, just go to the Denver B-Cycle website and type in an address or look at the map. Red locators tell you bikes are available at a location, grey locators tell you the location is out of bikes.
While you're sharing a bike, it's not free. You pay in two ways. First, there's an access fee, it ranges from $6 for 24 hours to $30 for 30 days to $65 for a year. On top of the access fee, you also pay a usage fee. The bike is free for the first 30 minutes. Then you pay $1 for 31-60 minutes and $4 for each additional half hour. That means borrowing a bike for one hour is $1, but two hours is $9, plus the access fee.At first this seems expensive, but if you just want to borrow a bike for an hour, you can get a $6 one day membership and pay the usage fee of $1. That means you can ride a bike for one hour for $7. Not cheap, but not terribly expensive compared to renting bikes from some places. And you can drop the bike off when you get to your location and borrow another when you leave.Denver's B-cycle system will operate from March to November, weather permitting. The system will operate seven days a week, but will shut down between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. During those hours, members can not check bikes out of a station, but you can return bikes to stations.Learn more about Denver's B-cycle on its website. If you see a deal, e-mail me Debbie (Debbie@thedenverchannel.com).Get the latest deals by following me on Facebook, Twitter @DebbiesDeals or sign up for a daily e-mail alert by visiting our e-mail alerts page.
