Debbie's Deals: How To Really Get A Free Credit Report

Have you seen the silly ads for a Web site called freecreditreport.com? The ads feature a guy singing in different scenarios about the importance of checking your credit report.

Since the ads started airing, thousands have gone to the Web site only to find out the credit report isn't really free. When you order the "free" report, you're actually starting a free trial membership in triple advantage credit monitoring from Experian. If you don't cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period, you will be billed $14.95 for each month that you continue your membership.

Now the FTC has forced freecreditreport.com to change its Web site and add a link at the top to the "real" free credit report site.

That real site for a free credit report is annualcreditreport.com. Using this Web site, you can request a free credit report (officially called a credit file disclosure) once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Right now the link on the so-called "free" site is pretty small, but under the FTC ruling, as of April 1st, any Web site offering free credit reports must include a disclosure, across the top of each page that mentions free credit reports, which states:

THIS NOTICE IS REQUIRED BY LAW. Read more at FTC.GOV. You have the right to a free credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com or 877-322-8228, the ONLY authorized source under federal law.

The Web site disclosure must include a clickable button to “Take me to the authorized source” and clickable links to AnnualCreditReport.com and FTC.GOV.
