DENVER -- 'Tis the season to donate money and items to charity, but you may be able to help a charity more without writing a bigger check. How? If you work for a company, talk to your Human Resources person or spend some time exploring your company's Web site.

Ask simply, does your company match charitable donations? I searched my company's Web site for "matching donations." You can also try "matching gift." Channel 7's parent company is McGraw-Hill. It offers a company match on donations of $25-$3,000 to 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

As I looked around the Web site, I also found out my company has several ways employees can get grants for the charities that they volunteer with. Under one program, the company will donate up to $500 to a nonprofit organization if an employee donates at least 50 hours of volunteer work.

Some companies also give outright donations to various charities.

While you may not be able to write a big check to charity, if your company does a matching donation, that means giving double the help to the charity you care about. It's worth taking a few minutes to find out.
