Walgreens Sells Pet Prescriptions

Have you had to buy any medicine for your pets? It can be very expensive.

A co-worker here at 7NEWS pays over $100 a month to buy insulin, thyroid medication and steroids for her cats. Sharon's vet told her she might save money by checking out the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club.

Here's how it works. Enrollment for an individual is $20 per year or $35 for an entire family. Family enrollment includes spouse, dependents under the age of 23 and pets. Yes, pets. A pet or pets can be included as part of a family membership. Simply add the pet's name in your list of dependents. You can add a pet at any time by stopping in or calling any Walgreens pharmacy or calling 866-922-7312. You can also enroll your pet as an individual member.

What medications are covered? Any medication that has a human equivalent and you must have a valid prescription for your pet.

The club includes discounted pricing on common medications often prescribed to pets, such as Amoxicillin (antibiotic), Humulin® (insulin), Hydrocortisone (skin conditions), Omeprazole (digestive), etc. Your veterinarian will tell you if your pet's prescription can be filled at a retail pharmacy.

In Sharon's case, the thyroid and steroid medications are at least 50 percent cheaper at Walgreens than at her vet's office. However, she can not get the insulin her cat needs at Walgreens, so she'll still have to buy that at the vet's office. In one month alone, she's going to save more than the $20 cost of the plan.

If you have pets that need medications, it's worth looking into. Thanks to Sharon for sharing her money-saving story with me.
