Debbie's Deals: Kids Learn To Fly Free

Young Eagles Program For Kids 8-17 Years Old

UPDATED: 2:43 pm MDT July 27, 2009

It's an amazing offer. Kids 8 to 17 years old can go on a free flight and learn what it's like to fly.

The Young Eagles Program was launched in 1992 to give interested young people an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane.

The flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of volunteers.

Kids who go on flights first learn a little of what happens before a flight, possibly talking about the plane; reviewing an aeronautical chart (or map); identifying reference points during the flight; completing a careful "walk around" preflight inspection of the airplane and identifying the parts that control the airplane.

Then they go flying. Most flights last 15 and 20 minutes.

Back on the ground, kids get to ask their pilot questions. They also get an official Young Eagles certificate signed by your personal pilot.

For more information, visit the Young Eagles Program Web site. To find a local pilot in your area, even in a relative's state, visit the find a pilot page.
