Debbie's Deals: Cashing In On Coupons

Report: Coupon Redemptions Up 17%

UPDATED: 12:31 pm MDT July 6, 2009

Hello, I'm back from vacation with a good article to share from Forbes magazine. It's about getting the most from clipping coupons.

Last month I bought $109 worth of groceries for $51 at Safeway. Even the clerk was surprised. How did I do it? Coupons from the Sunday paper and keeping my eyes open in the store. I had a coupon to buy-one-get-one free for salad dressing, so I picked up two bottles. On the next aisle I came across a sign that said buy two bottles of the salad dressing and get free ziplock bags.

As I went to buy soda, I saw an in store sign that said 4 12-packs for $9 with in store coupon. I quickly grabbed 4 12-packs and then asked how to get the coupon at the register. The clerk swiped her coupon and that took $16 off.

So how do you start saving?

Start with the Sunday newspaper. I only get the newspaper on Sundays and I do it for the coupons. I keep the coupons in my car so when I go to the grocery store, I have the coupons with me. (If a coupon is about to expire and you're not using it, consider leaving it next to the product so someone else can save a little.)

You don't have to take the Sunday paper to get the coupons. Some are on the internet (but not all). I wrote about coupons on the Web a few weeks ago.

Safeway and King Soopers also have coupons on their Web sites.

Even Walgreens, Target and Kmart have coupons on their Web sites. Check out this article I wrote about that last month.

And check out coupons.com for pages and pages of coupons.
