Debbie's Deals: Restaurant Gift Certificate Deals
Restaurant.com Offers Discounted Gift Certificates
UPDATED: 8:47 am MDT April 29, 2011
DENVER -- (This story was originally published in Aug. 2009, but the deal is back so I have updated this article with the new code.)Looking for a deal on eating out?You need to explore the Restaurant.com Web site.
Restaurant.com sells $25 gift certificates to restaurants for $10. (Some restaurants offer other denominations.) And if you use the code "Bonus" at check out until April 30th (Saturday), you'll get 80 percent off, making a $25 gift certificate $2.What's the catch? Some restaurants have minimum purchases, typically $35 to use a $25 gift certificate. Most also charge an 18 percent gratuity based on the original bill (which is appropriate). You can search restaurants by ZIP code. I tried 80203, which is the ZIP code of Channel 7 downtown, and found 185 restaurants within a 15-mile radius. Restaurants ranging from La Fondue to Wyland's Ocean to Prime Steakhouse.I heard about this Web site from DenverChannel readers Jennifer, Tracy & Heidi. Jennifer told me she uses this Web site to get gift certificates for "my parents, in-laws, birthdays, etc. all around the U.S. It's an easy way to save money and try places I wouldn't normally go."Tracy warned she bought gift certificates she didn't use right away and the restaurant went out of business. So Tracy said it's best to buy "a certificate when you are ready to use it or for near term use. I used two last week in L.A. when going out to dinner and have bought them for my college kids to use at school." (Restaurant.com told me it will give a customer credit if a restaurant goes out of business.)Jennifer said if you sign up to get their e-mail updates, they regularly have 50, 60, and even 80 percent off "sales," where that $25 certificate, normally $10, is only $4 or $2.If you see a deal, e-mail me Debbie (Debbie@thedenverchannel.com).Get the latest deals by following me on Facebook, Twitter @DebbiesDeals or sign up for a daily e-mail alert by visiting our e-mail alerts page.
