Almost half of Americans would rather live somewhere other than where they do now, and the majority of them, if they had their druthers, would live in Denver, according to a new national survey.

The findings, from the Pew Research Center's Social and Demographic Trends project, came from a telephone survey of 2,260 adults conducted in October.

Most young urbanites told Pew researchers they prefer living in cities, while most middle-aged urbanites would like to live elsewhere.

Seventy percent of men said they are happy with where they live, compared to about 50 percent of women.

Most rural conservatives said they feel right at home. Most urban liberals do, too, while most urban conservatives don't.

The favored top three urban areas on everyone's wanderlust list: Denver, followed by San Diego and Seattle. The bottom three: Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Thirty percent told Pew they would prefer to live in a small town, 25 percent seek the suburbs, 23 percent wanted to live in a city and 21 percent dreamed of rural living.

About seventy-five percent said they wanted to live where the pace of life is slow, and where neighbors know each other well.

Forty percent of those living in the suburbs, small towns and rural areas said they would rather live somewhere else, Pew found.
