Black Hawk Votes To Expand Casino Stakes, Hours

POSTED: 7:18 pm MST January 14, 2009
UPDATED: 7:19 pm MST January 14, 2009

Residents in the mountain town of Black Hawk have voted in favor of increasing the amount of bets and allowing 24-hour gambling at its casinos.

City spokesman Jim Licko says residents approved the measure Tuesday on a vote of 54-6.

The measure also allows casinos in Black Hawk to add craps and roulette and raise the stakes from $5 to $100. Licko says the provisions will take effect in July.

The local referendum is a product of a state constitutional amendment adopted with 60 percent of the statewide vote in November. Cripple Creek became the first of the state's three gambling towns to increase bets and hours when voters there approved a similar measure last month.

Central City will hold its election next Tuesday.
