LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The 50-story Enron building in Houston has been stripped of all that would remind people of the dirty deeds done in years past but now some souvenirs from those dark days have arrived in Colorado.Office Liquidators on 6th Avenue is the place where some of the Enron legacy is now for sale.Three semitrailer loads of Enron's office furniture have been unloaded for sale.
"There's cut beveled glass, brass fixtures, fine wood, lots of shelving, and furniture with fine craftsmanship," said Consumer Champ Bill Clarke, remarking on one of the cabinets that were for sale. The prices aren't dirt-cheap. One elegant desk from an Enron executive cost about $1,700."You know what's really a crime? That Enron paid so much for some of this stuff. A granite desk and a 12-foot long wall unit is $12,000," Clarke said. It's now selling for $1,900.Even if prices aren't cheap, people may be interested in the furniture as a conversation starter. One man came into the store Wednesday morning and bought a $600 chair marked down to $180. He told the salesman that he worked as a consultant for Enron and didn't get paid so it was his last chance to get something out of them.Dennis Meyer, the baron of bankruptcy and owner of Office Liquidators, had first pick of furniture from mid- and upper-management offices. And while top management offices were off limits, he did get a look."Mr. Lay's office had gold-plated bathroom fixtures. I've never seen anything like that before," said Meyer. The Enron furniture sale starts Thursday and will go as long as supplies last. But at this point, the furniture has lasted longer than Enron itself. And most of it looks like it has plenty more good years left in it.
