Mauer Appears To Be Favorite For AL MVP
(Sports Network) - The Baseball Writers' Association of America will continue to hand out their postseason awards on Monday, as the American League's Most Valuable Player will be announced.Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer figures to be the front-runner after leading the league with a .365 average, while playing the most demanding position on the field. It was his third batting title in the last four years. Despite missing more than a month, Mauer still managed to put up the best power numbers of his career, belting 28 home runs with 96 RBI. He also led the AL with a .444 on-base-percentage and a .587 slugging percentage. Mauer, whose previous career-high in home runs was 13 back in 2006, also captured his second straight Gold Glove Award and is the first player since George Brett in 1980 to lead the league in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging. Should he win, Mauer would become the fifth Twin to capture the award, joining Zoilo Versalles (1965), Harmon Killebrew (1969), Rod Carew (1977) and Justin Morneau (2006). Mauer's main competition will likely come from the World Series champion New York Yankees, specifically shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Teixeira. Jeter enjoyed a bounce-back season, as he scored 107 runs and hit .334 from the leadoff spot, while moving past Lou Gehrig as the franchise leader in hits along the way. The 35-year-old Jeter, who also took home his third Gold Glove Award, recorded his highest batting average and on-base-percentage (.406) since finishing as the runner-up in MVP voting to Mauer's teammate, Morneau, in 2006. Teixeira, meanwhile, couldn't have asked for a better first year in pinstripes, as he tied for the league lead with 39 home runs and topped the AL with 122 RBI to go along with a .292 average. Teixeira also played a superb first base and was rewarded with his third Gold Glove Award. Also figuring to get some votes will be Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera and the Angels' Kendry Morales and Bobby Abreu.
