Damon, Matsui Among Those Filing For Free Agency

New York, NY -- (Sports Network) - Outfielder Johnny Damon and designated hitter Hideki Matsui, keys to the New York Yankees' World Series victory, were among the 31 players to file for free agency Monday.Matsui was named World Series MVP after batting 8-for-13 with three homers and eight runs batted in -- the bulk of which came in a title-clinching Game 6 victory, when he tied a single-game World Series record with six RBI. The 35-year-old was in the final season of a four-year, $52 million contract, and finished the 2009 regular season with a .274 average, a .367 on-base percentage, 28 homers and 90 RBI. Since coming to the major leagues from Japan for the 2003 season, Matsui has spent his entire seven-season MLB career with the Yankees. Damon, 36, was a catalyst for the Yankees in the World Series, batting 8- for-22 with a .440 on-base percentage and three stolen bases. He had a .282 average, .365 OBP, 24 homers and 82 RBI in 143 regular-season contests in 2009, the final year of Damon's four-year deal. Also filing was third baseman Pedro Feliz, who had his option declined by the National League champion Phillies on Sunday. Chan Ho Park, who posted a 2.52 ERA out of the bullpen for Philadelphia in 2009, also filed. Among others filing were reliever Brandon Lyon (Detroit), closer Jose Valverde (Houston), outfielders Coco Crisp (Royals) and Gary Sheffield (Mets), and shortstop Orlando Cabrera (Twins). Monday's 31 players filing brought the total number to who have filed to 151.
