Mariners Activate Putz From DL; Option Rowland-Smith

POSTED: 1:43 pm MDT July 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners activated pitcher J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Putz, an all-star in 2007, had been on the disabled list since June 13 with a hyper extended right elbow. This was Putz's second trip to the DL in 2008 and in his career. He missed 18 games from April 2-21 with mild costochondritis (inflammation where cartilage attaches to a rib).

In 20 appearances in 2008, Putz is 2-3 with seven saves and a 5.21 earned run average.

Rowland-Smith, 25, is 2-1 with two saves and a 3.44 ERA in 37 games (two starts) this season.
