How to get the new Apple iPhones for a lower price

There’s a cheaper way to upgrade to a new iPhone 5S or 5C.

Retail giant Walmart is chopping the price on both new smartphones, offering a discount compared to prices at the Apple store or online store.

The iPhone 5C, which starts at $99 for the 16GB model with a two-year contract if you buy it from Apple, is only $79 at Walmart.

Looking to buy the high-end iPhone 5S model? Apple charges $199 for the 16GB phone, but Walmart charges $189.

While $10 may not sound like that big of a saving, you can spend that extra cash on a screen protector, several apps, a case or other accessories.

Want to save even more money?

The iPhone 5S and 5C won’t be in stores until Sept 20. But if you wait until one day after launch on Sept. 21, Walmart stores will accept a trade-in of your old smartphone and apply the credit toward your new iPhone purchase.

Costumers will receive a credit from $50 to $300 when they trade in their working, undamaged phone. The credit can be used toward the purchase of a new iPhone and more than 100 other phones.

Walmart says that consumers can receive a $300 credit for an Apple iPhone 5, $175 for a Samsung Galaxy SIII and $52 for a Samsung Galaxy S2 to spend on a new smartphone.

Phones can be traded in at the electronics departments of more than 3,600 participating Walmart stores in the U.S.

It’s important to note, getting a new iPhone for under $200 -- at Apple or Walmart -- will require you to sign a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. Walmart sells all three of these phone carrier services.

And a quick tip: It you plan on buying the iPhone 5C and don’t feel like being left in the dust on launch day, pre-orders started Friday at Apple, Walmart and Best Buy.

You can’t pre-order the iPhone 5S, but you can purchase it online or at Walmart, Apple and Best Buy on Sept. 20.
