DENVER -- Winter will be coming to an end soon and for people who have been thinking about buying a new home, the warmer months are usually the time to start looking.

But finding a home to buy in the Denver area has been getting increasingly difficult as prices rise and the number of available listings drops.

In February, the median home price in metro Denver hit $400,000, up 12 percent from the same time last year, according to the latest data from the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

The type of home a buyer can expect to get for that price varies quite a bit across the metro area. In some areas, you can find a single-family detached home while in others, like Denver, you're more likely to find a condo or townhouse.

Detached homes tend to be more expensive - the median is $435,000 - while condos are priced lower, with a median of $296,000. There were about three times as many detached homes on the market in February compared to condos.

Below is a selection of homes currently listed for $400,000 or so (all property listing information courtesy of REColorado):

This two-story ranch-style home in Lakewood has three bedrooms, a fairly new roof and a "double-sized" backyard, according to the property listing.

3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 1,443 sq. ft.

This townhouse in the Lowry neighborhood is 10 years old and has three bedrooms. Though it is attached, it's an end unit so you only have neighbors on one side.

1700 Bassett St. #313, Denver - $400,000
1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 709 sq. ft.
Built in 2005

This might be one of the smallest homes for sale at the $400,000 price point. Located right across from Commons Park on the South Platte, this is prime real estate, so you don't get quite as much for your money. It's a one-bedroom condo that's just over 700 square feet.

3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 1,671 sq. ft.

You can find a brand new home for $400,000 if you don't mind moving to the outer edge of the metro area. This newly-built Aurora home has three bedrooms and backs up to a golf course.
