Sept. 29 is a big moving day for The Children's Hospital.

Plans are underway to relocate patients and staff to the new facility at Interstate 225 and Colfax Avenue in Aurora.

"I can't wait for them to see it," Chief Nursing Officer Lynne Hedrick told 7NEWS during a tour Thursday. "I'm just tickled, I'm very excited."

The new, 1.45 million-square-feet pediatric hospital is 73 percent larger than the current facility, according to information provided by hospital. The new building has nine floors and 270 beds, 14 operating rooms, two cardiology surgical operating rooms and nine minor surgical procedure suites.

"Our new location gives Children's the space it needs to treat more than 100,000 children each year and provide them with access to the most modern technologies and advanced medical care," said Jim Shmerling, president and CEO of The Children's Hospital.

The $560 million facility was designed with input from physicians, staff and patients.

"Every aspect of the hospital was designed with the best interests of patients and their families in mind," said Shmerling.

The hospital's bright colors, natural light and art were meant to create an environment of hope and healing. Famed Colorado photographer John Fielder's work has been incorporated into the hospital decor.

A Teen Lounge will greet patients who 13 to 19 years old. The area includes a movie theatre, iPod hook up, and private phone booth.

"Privacy is important when you're a teenager," said former patient Connor Randall, whose had two heart transplants. Randall said a designated teen hangout is important.

"Entertainment through things like television helps keep your mind off the fact you're in a hospital, going through a sickness," said Randall.

The new facilities also feature nearly all private patient rooms and bathrooms with sleeping accommodations for family members and a range of increased family-based amenities, including family lounges, a family library and business center and expanded sibling care.

In spite of the upcoming move, The Children's Hospital will continue its presence in downtown Denver. A new 16-bed facility is set to open inside St. Joseph Hospital Sept 17.
