The FDA approved a new iPhone case that is a fully functional heart monitor.

The AliveCor Heart Monitor is a $200 smartphone case and app that produces an EKG when held in your hands or pressed against your chest.  The case communicates wirelessly with the app, and sends patient data to a site that stores and tracks all EKG ratings.

The device is currently only available in pre-order for U.S. medical professionals.

AliveCor says the portability and affordability of the device could make it enormously helpful for EMTs and paramedics, and empower patients to become more involved in their own health.
