WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Foods you think are helping you shed the pounds could be packing on the pounds instead.
The American Heart Association recommends the equivalent of 9 tablespoons of sugar a day for an adult man. Most children have 11 tablespoons of sugar just for breakfast.
Registered dietician Nichole Marchand helped us identify the foods that aren’t as healthy as they seem.
"Companies are out there to make money so they're going to make their product look healthy and a lot of times it's not," said Marchand.
1. Fruit juice
Too much of a good thing can be bad. A small apple juice has the equivalent of three apples.
Marchand says, "Fruit is good for you, of course but in moderation, not having four different types of fruit in one setting."
Mix vegetables with fruits with a juicer bullet and make it a 75 percent vegetable and 25 percent juice mix.
2. Peanut butter
The second ingredient in most jars of peanut butter is sugar.
Almond butter is a great alternative. It has fewer calories, less sugar and a great source of omega 3 fatty acids which have several health benefits.
3. Trail mix
Most are loaded with salt and sugar. A small bag can have as many as 6 to 7 servings. Eating an entire bag could equal more than half of your recommended calorie intake for an entire day.
Marchand says, "It's all about moderation and picking the right foods. I mean, you can have a balanced diet and think that you're getting the right things and end up getting a lot more calories and sugar than you need in a day."
4. Gatorade, Powerade and sport drinks
Sugar is the second main ingredient in most sports drinks. Drink a coconut water for a healthier way to rehydrate.
5. Powerbars and meal replacement bars
Typically, these consist of a lot of sugar as well. Unsalted almonds and cashews are a healthier alternative.
