Colorado residents sought for cancer study: Enrollment begins Sept. 4

17 enrollment locations across the Front Range

DENVER - Half a million people are being recruited for a study that aims to find what causes cancer and how to prevent it.

The American Cancer Society is looking for men and women along the Front Range between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer.

Volunteers for the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) will be asked to complete a brief survey, give a blood sample and have their waist measured.

The process takes 20-30 minutes, according to the American Cancer Society.

Every few years, participants will be sent follow up surveys.

The society began a similar study in 1982 and it is still ongoing.

The new study is needed due to changes in lifestyle and a better understanding of the risk factors for cancer, according to the Society.

"Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, 'What caused my cancer?' In many cases, we don't know the answer," said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., principal investigator of CPS-3.

"CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer."

Enrollment begins Sept. 4 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Xilinx at 3100 Logic Drive in Longmont

There are 17 locations across the front range hosting enrollment dates through Sept. 20
