Blood supply at Colorado's Bonfils Blood Center is at dangerously low levels, donors needed

Colorado's blood supply is at dangerously low levels.

Bonfils Blood Center only has enough blood for one day. The organization's goal is to maintain a five-day supply.

Now, Bonfils Blood Center is asking people to donate before the start of the holiday weekend.

“Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer where we see donations decline because people are out of town or they’re enjoying the beautiful Colorado sunshine” says Jessica Maitland, with Bonfils.

“We’ve seen fewer donors than usual since March and in the last two weeks our hospital partners have been utilizing more blood than usual,” Maitland said.

The O- blood type will always be needed as it’s the universal donor type and can be given to any patient in an emergency situation before his or her blood type is known.  People with the  A+ and O+ blood types make up 71 percent of the population so these types are more frequently transfused. Blood types A-, B+, B-, AB+ and AB- collectively comprise about 22 percent of the population.

Bonfils operates six Denver Metro area Community Donor Centers as well as one in Colorado Springs. There are also several mobile blood drives happening each day in various communities around the state.
