AURORA, Colo. – Police in Aurora are treating a recent act of vandalism at a Cherry Creek school as a racially-motivated hate crime.

Vandals spray-painted hateful messages on the baseball field at Cherokee Trail High School, located at 255901 East Arapahoe Road in Aurora.

Police say the vandals struck sometime Friday night, but it wasn't discovered until Saturday morning. School officials say they immediately removed the offensive messages.

Police are not releasing what was scrawled on the field at this time because they believe it could compromise their investigation. They may release photos of the scene at a later date, Aurora Police told Denver7.

Cherokee Trail High School Principal Kim Rauh sent a letter home to parents Wednesday. The letter states district officials and Aurora Police are “aggressively pursuing leads to catch the person or persons responsible.”

Rauh continues and reminds parents that the school remains a welcoming place. “Cherokee Trail will continue to be a place where all students are safe and valued, regardless of religion, race, gender or belief.”
