Denver mother claims son was left alone on playground after school

DENVER -- Not being able to find a child after school is one of the worst nightmares for any parent, and that's exactly what happened to one Colorado mother this week. 

Jorden Wilson said that was her reality Monday when she showed up to a church after school program and couldn’t find her son.

Wilson said the church never picked her son up from Smith Elementary School and two hours after dismissal, he was found alone on the playground on school property.

“You can't leave a kid by themselves, you never know who's going to walk up and take them,” said Wilson. “He just asked me, he didn't know if I was going to pick him up he said he was scared that he was not going to get picked up, he didn't know when I was coming and so he was just a little scared, but he was okay.”

While Wilson accuses the school leaders of breaking their own policies, a district spokesperson said school leaders report following all proper protocol Monday.

“When a kid sees their ride, whether that be a bus, whether that be van, whether that be a parents car, they let the teacher know, the teacher makes visual contact with that vehicle and then as an added precaution, the kids comes over and does a high five with their teacher,” said Will Jones, spokesperson with Denver Public Schools.

Wilson said she is still concerned, but glad her son is okay.
