Want To Get Rid Of Stuff? Or Get Stuff For Free?

Freecycling Allows People To Recycle Unwanted Items

As the saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure and one Web site is taking that to heart in an effort to reduce the amount of junk ending up in our landfills.

Freecycle

If you're looking for ways to get rid of items you don't want then Freecycle.org may be the community for you.

There are more than 370 cities taking part in the Freecycle movement, with Portland, Ore., and Austin, Texas, the sites with the largest number of members.

The idea is simple: you post a message of what you're offering or what you need and other members e-mail you back to arrange a time for them to pick up the item.

Items can range from couches to toasters to mattresses and patio furniture. Earlier this month, on the Denver Freecycle board, one person offered a microwave, and it was snatched up two days later. Coloradoans were also offering rose bushes, utility shelves, computer desks, infant clothing and even rabbits.

It's free to participate in the forum but you have to follow the rules of etiquette. The item posted has to be free -- no trading or bartering -- and you're not allowed to spam anyone on the list or talk politics.

The Freecycle Network is a project of RISE Inc., a nonprofit organization aimed at reducing waste, generating employment training, and fostering cooperation between other nonprofit organizations and the public. The Freecycle Network launched in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Arizona and it has taken off ever since because it's a simple idea that works.

So if you're doing some spring cleaning and you only have a few items to give away, you might want to check out the site Freecycle.org.
