DENVER -- It's May 1, which means 1.2 million water customers can start thinking about watering their lawns. For some, this couldn't come at a better time. For others, our recent wet weather may have helped them out a bit and their lawns may not need much water.
Under the new rules, people with even-numbered addresses will be allowed to water Thursdays and Sundays. People with odd numbered addresses will be allowed to water Wednesdays and Saturdays. Businesses, apartment complexes and common areas shared by homeowner associations can water Tuesdays and Fridays.
The maximum time you can water is 15 minutes in each sprinkler zone, with a maximum of eight zones.
Watering is not allowed between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and not allowed on Mondays. If you have fountains, waterfalls or ponds that shoot water in the air, you still cannot turn them on. However, you can finally wash your car but only on your designated watering day, but only with a bucket and hose with a shut-off nozzle.
If you think you can get away with watering on an off-day or watering as long as you want, think again. Water patrols will be out in force.
"I don't expect we'll give a whole lot of tickets (initially) because we want to make sure that people get it. After that we intend to be pretty tough when it comes to enforcing these restrictions," said Trina McGuire Collier, spokeswoman for Denver Water.
Denver Water's rules not only affect the city of Denver but also most of Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Glendale, Greenwood Village, Littleton, parts of Broomfield and several smaller water districts.
Aurora's water restrictions are similar to Denver's but won't be in effect until Saturday.
