Garden Tip: Caring For Garden Tools

Tips From Rocky Mountain Horticulturist and Master Gardener John Cretti

Garden tools are an investment that you want to make last. Winter is one of the best times to evaluate your tools and do some yearly maintenance. John Cretti, Colorados Master Gardener and Horticulturist, shares some tips on Keeping Pruners in Shape.

1.When buying pruners, look for models that can be taken apart, and purchase replacement blades for future use.

2. After disassembling pruners, clean them with sandpaper or a wire brush.

3.Use the ceramic stone sold with the pruners to sharpen the blades.

4. Smooth out any dents or nicks in the blades using an electric wet wheel.

For more details on gardening in Colorado and the Rockies, consult John Cretti's book "COLORADO GARDENER'S GUIDE -- the What , Where, When, How and Why of Gardening in Colorado!
