Detectives investigate murders in San Diego: Shootings reported in Lincoln Park, Logan Heights

SAN DIEGO - Homicide detectives with the San Diego Police Department worked Thursday to investigate two murders that occurred within hours of each other.

The first occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near 50th Street and Imperial Avenue in Lincoln Park.

A resident called 911 after she heard four gunshots then saw a man lying dead on a neighbor’s front yard from an apparent wound to the head.

Several blocks were taped off and closed to traffic as homicide detectives investigated and police searched for several suspects.

Moments before the gunfire, the victim and several other individuals were standing in the complex and witnesses saw the group scatter after shots rang out, police said.

At around 8 p.m., police responded to a 911 call of shots fired in Logan Heights near 33rd Street and Gilette Street.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man in his 40s clinging to life with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was pronounced dead a short time after paramedics arrived and his body was covered with a yellow tarp.

“The male was standing on the curb when he was approached by males in a vehicle. Shots were fired and the victim fell to the ground,"  Lt. Jorge Duran with San Diego police told 10News. "The vehicle fled north on 33rd Street near Imperial Avenue.”

Several residents who did not want to talk on camera, described what they heard as a single gunshot blast, similar to that of a shotgun.

Police said they were not ruling out whether the two homicides, just two miles from each other, were connected.

"We haven't had two murders in one night in a while, so yeah for us, for the homicide unit, it’s pretty busy.," said Duran after 10News reporter Preston Phillips asked whether Thursday's two cases were keeping investigators unusually busy.

Homicide detective were still processing the scene over 50th Street and Imperial Avenue as of 11 p.m.  The name of the shooting victim there has not been released.

The man killed on 33rd Street and Gilette also has yet to be identified.

Anyone with information about the shootings are asked to call SDPD homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
