Can Device 'Bug' You To Eat Less?

If you're like most people, you want to lose weight, but you just don't have the motivation. There are new devices out there that claim to be a dieter's pal that can help push you to success in your weight loss journey.

7NEWS puts one of these devices to the test.

"I've tried different diets over the years and kind of got tired of doing them," said Andrea LeClaire.

LeClaire said she doesn't have the motivation nor the time to make a weight loss plan work.

"I have 5-year-old twins and I work full-time so there are not a lot of extra hours in the day left over to exercise," she said.

But she would still like to lose 10 to 15 pounds so she tried a little device called the Bodybugg. The makers claim it will help manage a person's weight loss without guesswork.

"I think it will be easier than just trying to figure out the calories myself and figuring out the exercise myself," she said.

The Bodybugg straps to your arm, you wear it all day long and it tracks the calories you burn. At the end of the day, you plug the device into a computer, it uploads your calories burned and then you type in what you've eaten.

"I have to report everything that I eat and so today, I had one less cupcake at a birthday party because I didn't want to report two cupcakes," LeClaire said.

She got immediate feedback on the amount of fat, carbohydrates, and protein that she's had in a day, plus the calorie deficit that is needed to lose weight.

LeClaire also talked to a coach who gives her nutrition and exercise advice.

"There's a big benefit to having to write something down and then having someone review it. It's kind of like a report card," she said.

"Something really great about the devices, whether it's the Bodybugg or you've got a heart rate monitor or a pedometer, is it can be very motivating tool," said Kim Gorman with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Gorman, a weight management program director at the Center of Human Nutrition, said devices alone will not help you shed the pounds.

"The bottom lines still lands, what is the consumer's expectation for that product? If it is weight loss, I strongly encourage consumers to say, 'What else do I have to do to in addition to having this device to lose some weight?'" Gorman said.

And while LeClaire hasn't lost much weight, she has made some changes that she credits to the Bodybugg.

"It's changed how I'm eating," she said.

She has no more bagels for breakfast, pizza for lunch, and a candy bar for a late afternoon snack.

"I need to eat a lot less fat. The first week I was in there, I was eating about 45 percent fat which I was really surprised about because I didn't think I ate that much fat," said LeClaire. "This has been a real eye opener for me."
