Boy Critical After Shooting Self In Face

Durango Boy Was Handling Brother's Rifle When It Discharged

POSTED: 11:16 am MDT April 10, 2006

An eleven-year-old Durango boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday after accidentally shooting himself in the face.

La Plata County sheriff's officials said Kevin Abbott was unconscious when rescue crews arrived at his home Sunday afternoon.

Paramedics revived the boy at the scene and rushed him to a local hospital, before he was airlifted to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. A spokeswoman at Swedish Medical said Abbott was in an intensive care unit in "very critical condition."

Investigators said the boy was handling his brother's rifle when the accident occurred.

Investigator Shelley Williams said the case is under investigation, but that the boy's 16-year-old brother is not a suspect. He was present when Abbott was shot. The rifle was a gift to the older boy a week ago.

Kevin is in the fifth grade at Animas Valley Elementary School.
