Good Samaritan Fights Off Boxers To Save Woman
POSTED: 4:46 am MST March 28, 2006
DENVER -- A Denver grandmother was recovering Tuesday after being viciously mauled by two dogs, thanks to the intervention of a Good Samaritan. The dog attack happened just before noon Monday in the 9900 block of Wagon Trail."They actually got her on the ground and continued to attack her. She screamed," said Doug Kelly, with Denver Animal Control.
Clint Kell, 25, happened to be driving through the area when he heard screaming and saw Mae Butts trying to fight off two boxer dogs."It just snapped, (I) didn't think twice, (and) just got out and started helping," said Kell. "They were trying to get at me the entire time. I was trying to shoo them away with my foot and kick at them and one of them was trying to bite my foot."Kell succeeded in stopping the attack and used his T-shirt to make a tourniquet for her leg until help arrived.Butts suffered serious injuries in the attack."It's pretty brutal, she had a chunk of her right leg taken out -- about the size of an apple," said her grandson, Garrett Goudeseune. She lost part of a finger and had massive trauma to one of her legs, but is expected to recover."If this young kid wouldn't have showed up, these dogs would have killed this lady," said Dan Metherd, with the Denver Fire Department.About a half-hour before the dogs attacked Butts, Robert Zamudio said the dogs aggressively came after him while he was working on his truck."I finally had to charge them until they ran off, but every time I turned my back they kept coming at me," he told 7NEWS.One of the boxers was captured by Denver Animal Control but the other dog was still on the loose Tuesday."Boxers can be very protective," said Kelly. The dogs' owner was identified as Todd Eckart, 32. He was cited for two counts each of a dog attack resulting in bites, dog at large, vaccination violation, licensing law violation, and spay and neuter violation. He faces a fine of $1,000 and one year in jail for each of the main counts.Eckart has surrendered his ownership of both dogs and the dog that is in quarantine may be euthanized.Although Butts is recovering, she may not walk alone again, her family said."Not without a can of Mace or some pepper spray with her," said the victim's son, Mark Goudeseune."She's a really frail old lady who likes to take a walk every once in a while and to have something like this happen to her is horrible," said Garrett Goudeseune.
