Coroner: Two More Children Die From Flu

State Health Figures To Be Released Wednesday

POSTED: 5:12 p.m. MST December 2, 2003

The Adams County Coroner Office said Tuesday that autopsies confirmed three children, all under 5 years of age, have died from the flu recently. That brings to six, the number of children who have died from the latest influenza outbreak.

Two of the children died Sunday and Monday. They were from the Thornton area, 7NEWS reported.

A third Adams County child died on Nov. 11, according to the coroner. The office did not release the exact ages of the flu victims.

The Colorado Department of Health said it was unaware of the Adams County deaths.

Further lab tests are pending, the Coroner's Office said in a release, but influenza is considered to be a contributing factor in the deaths of all three children. Each child had been experiencing flu-like symptoms for several days prior to their deaths, according to the Coroner's Office, and preliminary test results revealed positive A influenza in all children.

Two of the children appeared to have no other medical concern with the third child having other underlying medical history.

The State Health Department said the next update on the number of flu cases, including the number of Coloradans who have died so far this season, will be released Wednesday.

Prior to Tuesday's announcement by the Adams County Coroner's Office, four Colorado children were known to have died from the flu so far this season.
