DENVER -- By just about any standard, Lisa Holste is in great shape."I do pilates here at Pilates Within about four days a week. I do yoga twice a week. I’m training for a three-day walk, so I walk a lot, too," said Holste. But the 41-year-old Denver hairdresser said no matter what she does, she can’t get rid of stubborn fat on her lower abs.
"When you work out, watch what you eat and you still feel these areas that are overlapping your pants, what options are there?” she said. "I'm not expecting to look 20 years old. That's never going to happen again. I just want to feel more comfortable in my clothes."Wouldn’t it be nice if she could just freeze the fat away? Some doctors say a new technique may make that possible.Dr. Alexis Parker is the first physician in Colorado to put flab on ice."It's revolutionary. It's never been done," said Parker. It’s called Zeltiq. A group of Harvard doctors developed it based on the idea that fat cells are vulnerable to cold."The fat cells actually crystallize," said Parker. "Our bodies, when they see a cell that's harmed, they carry it away."In the procedure, a handheld device sucks targeted fat between two metal cooling plates for about an hour.“The studies show it works. You removed over 22 percent of your fat layer," said Parker. She said there is no pain, no downtime and no long-term side effects.Holste was one of the first in the state to try it out."It was cold and that went away, so that was very easy. I'm going about my day. I have lots to do and I feel like I can do that," said Holste.Meanwhile, Parker said Holste’s body will flush out the dead fat cells, and she’ll see the results in about two months.Zeltiq has been FDA approved for skin cooling during certain treatments, but not for reducing fat.Doctors we talked to said it will be approved for that soon, and until then it’s safe to use “off label.”To learn more about the procedure and the costs click here .For more on Dr. Parker's Clinic Lasair click here.
