DENVER -- You've heard of so-called "Superfoods," foods so good for you, they've now got super-star status."My hope is it's one thing I can eat, and it would be the answer to everything," said Ellen Rosenblum, a Centennial mother who tries to feed her family the right foods. No matter what your age, it would be nice to find a nutritional magic bullet.
The closest foods we have to that are so dense in nutrients dietitians dub them "SuperFoods."The "Superfoods" are good at any age, but at certain times in your life, you have specific nutritional challenges for which certain foods are especially beneficial.Teens -- Yogurt"I chose Greek yogurt," said Registered Dietician Traci Thompson. She said in the teenage years, yogurt provides much-needed protein and calcium.Plus, live and active cultures may boost the immune system and reduce tooth decay.Blend with blueberries, bananas and a little milk and you have an anti-oxidant packed breakfast on-the-go.20s -- Green VegetablesFor 20-somethings, green vegetables get the Superfood stamp of approval."A lot of times early twenties are busy getting going with their career or school, and vegetables often fall off the radar," said Thompson. But, she said, the phytonutrients found in green vegetables such as asparagus have been shown to help prevent cancer, and you can't get them in a supplement.30s -- Whole Grain Cereal With Calcium-Enriched Beverage"The next is 30-somethings, and I chose whole grain cereal," said Thompson. During child-bearing years, it's important for women to get folic acid, and most cereal is fortified with it, said Thompson.Pair that with a beverage containing calcium, a mineral many 30-somethings aren't getting enough of.40s -- Wild SalmonIn your forties when heart health is an increasing concern, wild salmon gets the superfood nod."It provides a great source of lean protein, and those omega 3 fatty acids help with heart health and also to reduce inflammation," said Thompson.50s -- Nuts and BeansIn your fifties, nuts, seeds and beans are an excellent source of protein without the saturated fat that comes with meat. Also, for better digestion at this time in life, they're full of fiber.60s -- Spinach Everyone knows spinach is good for them, but in your sixties when you may need fewer calories, spinach is concentrated nutrition. "Pair that with something like avocado that has a healthy fat component that helps absorb some of the fat-soluble vitamins and you have a real powerhouse," said Thompson.70s and Beyond -- Egg"70s and beyond, we picked the egg," said Thompson.Eggs are one of the most efficient and economical sources of protein, and eat the yolk -- it has vision-boosting lutein and choline, which helps produce chemicals needed for thinking and memory. So, while there may be no nutritional magic bullet, these superfoods are a start."It's a good key for what's generally lacking or essential in your diet as your body is changing," said Rosenblum, who plans to cook some of these superfoods as soon as possible.
