Man Aware During 23 Years In 'Coma'

Patient Can Now Type Messages

POSTED: 8:01 am MST November 23, 2009

A man who was thought to be unconscious in a coma for 23 years after a car crash was aware the whole time, the Daily Mail reported.

The British news service said that Rom Houben can now tap on a computer to communicate with others.

Houben's conscious state was discovered three years ago when a new scan discovered that he had normal activity in his brain.

Doctors said that while his mind was still active all that time, Houben has lost the ability to control his body, but therapy is improving his skills.
