Women often talk of their intuition, especially when it comes to their bodies. That can help when it comes to determining possible health issues, but only if they mention it to their doctor.

"Women tend to underestimate their symptoms and doctors tend to underestimate women's symptoms," said Dr. Jennifer Kubista, a family physician at Westside Family Medicine in Arvada.

"If a man comes in and he's 50 and is having chest pain, by the time he comes in I kind of assume its something I need to address. But if a women comes in and says, 'Oh, I've been having some pains but they are fine', then it's really easy for me to overlook that," said Kubista.

7News and TheDenverChannel asked Kubista to identify four critical health symptoms women must never ignore.

  • Unexplained, severe throat and neck pain could indicate a heart attack.

"They can have burning chest pain or sharp chest pain. they might not have any. they may have throat pain and specifically if they have throat pain with things like nausea, sweating, just feeling not well," said Kubista. She also emphasized that this pain is very different from that of a typical cold or post-nasal drip.

  • Sudden difficulty breathing or fatigue could indicate a blood clot in the lungs.

"What we see is shortness of breath, rapid heart rate and rapid respiratory rate are they are the things we'd worry about. There's really no good test for that except in the emergency room. So, if you think that's what it is that's probably where you need to be, " said Kubista.

Anyone can feel tired after a workout or a stressful week, but Kubista emphasized that if these symptoms are sudden there is reason for concern.

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding could indicate an ectopic pregnancy or other health concerns.

"Often times that is stress related, from an abnormal period or from birth control. But, if you're over 35 and you have pain those are things that need to be seen pretty much right away," said Kubista.

Your doctor can help to determine if something more serious is going on.

"It can be something as easy as a missed pill from your birth control, but certainly there are scarier things like endrometrial cancer, inflammation that may be sexually transmitted or may not. But, those are things that should be evaluated and examined," said Kubista.

  • Sudden, but constant abdominal discomfort could mean Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease or even cancer.

"If you have bloating or discomfort there is no good screening for ovarian cancer. So, if you are having symptoms like that it is reasonable to go talk to your doctor. You may need an ultrasound," said Kubista.

While these may be the top four danger signs to look for, Kubista also cautions that a constant cough should be treated as should depression.

In general women need to be up front with their health questions and concerns.

"One of the other issues certainly is a lot of women don't want to bring things to the forefront. But, I think if women just listen to their bodies and address what their concerns are then we can help," said Kubista.
