Denver Health Scraps 17 Flu Clinics Because Of Vaccine Shortage

Shots Will Only Be Given To High-Risk

Denver Health announced Friday that 17 of the 19 flu clinics it had planned for November are being scrapped because of a shortage in the H1N1 vaccine.

The two flu clinics that will still occur will be on Nov. 8 and Nov. 21 at the Eastside Family Health Center and the Westside Family Health Center. The clinics will open at 8 a.m. and will remain open until the supply runs out. The shots will only be given to people in the high risk categories -- pregnant women, children and health care workers who have a photo ID.

So far, the state has only received 250,000 doses of the swine flu vaccine, and the state has distributed all available doses to city and county hospitals, OB/GYN practices, pediatric patrices, and health care workers, said Denver Public Health Director Chris Urbina.

As of Friday Denver Health has only received less than 30 percent of the H1N1 vaccine it ordered from the Centers for Disease Control, he said.

"We have hundreds of doses, but we had hoped to have tens of thousands of doses," Urbina said.

He believes as much as half the state's 4.9 million residents might want the shots.

The delay has occurred because the nation's health officials and five vaccine manufacturers needed time to target the specific flu strain for the vaccine, then manufacture and test the medication for safety and effectiveness.

"We're going to pull it in and we're going to give it out" as the vaccine arrives," Urbina said.
