4 Confirmed H1N1 Cases Reported At CU

University Says 85 Probable Cases Pending

As of Friday, four H1N1 cases have been reported at CU's Wardenberg Health Center. Eighty-five probable cases have also been reported.

The other 85 students have not been tested for H1N1. Instead they tested positive for Influenza A. The H1N1 is a type of Influenza A, but only state officials can test for it.

These numbers do not include students who may be receiving care with outside health providers.

Since there is more understanding about this strain of flu, testing at CU has scaled back.

According to a an e-mail sent to CU Students, beginning next week the university will only test students "with high-risk criteria" in order to preserve enough flu-testing kits for when the seasonal flu hits campus later this fall/winter.

Pregnant women, people with chronic illness and people with suppressed immune systems are considered "high risk."

Dr. Pam Talley of the Wardenburg Health Center told the Boulder Daily Camera the 85 probable cases may seem like a lot, but it's not an overwhelming number given there are close to 30,000 students on campus.

CU and the Boulder County Public Health Department are working together to make sure that Wardenburg Health Center has enough vaccines such as Tamiflu.

CU has told sick students to stay in their dorm rooms or at home if they get sick. Professors have been told to give lenience to sick students.

The university said they will provide hand sanitizer to fans at the CU vs. CSU football game Sunday.

The university emergency manager, Deborah Imel Nelson told the Camera stick football fans should stay away from the Rocky Mountain Showdown Sunday.

"Cheer the Buffs from home on television," she said.
