DENVER -- A popular annual overnight camp for asthmatic kids near Boulder will be canceled as a precaution against H1N1 flu virus, organizers announced Tuesday. The Champ Camp, scheduled to occur from July 19 through July 25 at Glacier View Ranch, was canceled by its organizers, the American Lung Association in Colorado.Kids at the camp, because of their condition, would be both more susceptible to respiratory disease and would more likely experience complications if they contracted the so-called swine flu.
"We know this is extremely disappointing for our campers and their families, our camp volunteers and our camp sponsors. However, because of the unique population of our campers and the fact that they already suffer from compromised lung function, we believe this action is in the best interest of these children's health and the health of our volunteers," said Curt Huber, executive director of the American Lung Association in Colorado.During the course of the summer camp season so far this year, 52 camps in 20 states have reported outbreaks of the H1N1 virus. Additionally, Colorado is listed at the second highest of six levels for the spread of H1N1 virus on the Web site for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The federal government is gearing up for a major vaccination campaign beginning as early as October. The American Lung Association is urging people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as emphysema or bronchitis to get vaccinated.Lung Association staff have been calling and e-mailing campers and volunteers, and will fully refund all fees. For more information on details about camp, camper refunds, or for information about Lung Association programs call 303-388-4327 or visit the www.LungColorado.org.
