Getting dizzy is often associated with rides at the amusement park and perhaps dehydration. But according to medical experts, there are so many different reasons for dizziness -- some of which are very serious.

Vertigo makes you feel like you are spinning around. This is what you get when you spin on a chair. It can be caused by migraines, inner ear infections, strokes and other things -- such as Menieres disease.

Lightheadedness is the sensation that you are about to pass out, or you need to sit down. It is caused by things such as dehydration, lack of body fluids, or lack of blood volume from bleeding. In addition, abnormal heart rhythms, colds, severe infections, early strokes, and severe bacterial illnesses or blood chemical levels being off can bring people in complaining of dizziness or lightheadedness.

There are many other sensations of dizziness that make you feel off-balance, unable to concentrate or sea sick.

"Almost anything can lead to a complaint of dizziness. It is very important to get to your physician and have them try to figure out what is causing the symptom -- and more importantly to rule out or exclude -- the most serious causes for dizziness," said Dr. Dianne McCallister, the chief medical officer for Porter Adventist Hospital.

You should call 911 or go to the emergency room if the dizziness is associated with any of the below symptoms

  • Head Injury
  • new/different or severe headache
  • fever of more than 101
  • very stiff neck
  • blurred vision or hearing loss
  • difficulty with speech
  • leg/arm weakness
  • loss of consciousness/fainting
  • numbness /tingling
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain or very slow or very fast heartbeat
  • severe bleeding
  • black or tarry stools
