CU Says Second Student Has H1N1

19 People In State Now Have H1N1 Flu

POSTED: 11:03 am MDT May 6, 2009

The University of Colorado at Boulder announced a second student has tested positive for the H1N1 flu, officials said Wednesday.

The student lives off campus and is self-isolating and is completing end-of-the-semester work from home, officials said in a news release.

CU medical officials said there is little public health risk from the case.

"As we have said previously, a few cases of the virus on campus does not constitute a health threat to the general population," said Dr. Pamela Talley, lead physician for the medical clinic at CU-Boulder’s Wardenburg Health Center. "The two students are recovering and self-isolating, and we have taken precautions with the rest of our students on campus."

Final exams will end on schedule on Thursday, and commencement is scheduled for Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. in Folsom Field. Hand gel and extra tissues will be available for attendees at commencement, said CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard.

"There is no increased health risk for guests who might attend commencement or who are picking up their students in the residence halls over a normal flu season," said Talley. "We do advise those at risk for complications from any flu – pregnant women, people with immuno-suppression (cancer patients, diabetics) or parents who may have small children – to take precautions in large public gatherings, whether on campus or elsewhere."

Also Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said more Coloradans have tested positive for swine flu, bringing the state total to 19.

The Department of Health's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ned Calonge, said the number of cases reported are "just a snapshot of the cases" that exist because many people who contract H1N1 do not suffer symptoms serious enough to visit a doctor.

Excel Academy Charter School in Arvada and Park Lane Elementary School in Aurora remained closed Wednesday after students there tested positive for the H1N1 virus earlier this week.

During the regular 2008-2009 flu season in Colorado, 509 patients required hospitalization for either influenza A or B viruses. During that same period, four children died in the state, according to records. The Colorado Health Department does not list adult deaths on its Web site.

Health Department officials said there are four cases in Adams County, five in Arapahoe County, one in Boulder County, two in Denver County, three in Jefferson County and one each in Douglas, Eagle and Fremont counties.
