State Investigates 5 Suspected Swine Flu Cases

Pediatrician Offices Logging More Calls From Concerned Parents

Colorado health officials are awaiting test results for what they call five suspected cases of swine flu. No cases have been confirmed yet in Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says it expects the results Thursday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials are not disclosing where the suspected cases are in Colorado.

"It's a really scary thing," said Kristi Wasson.

There is also a growing fear among the community that they or their child could catch the potentially deadly strain next.

"You never know. It takes one person landing in Denver and it starts spreading," said Ethan Chambers.

Dr. Nancy Lataitis, with Partners in Pediatrics, said that sort of concern is what is causing her office phones to ring more than usual. She said people are calling the office asking to speak to her directly, shrugging off office staff advice.

"I had a phone call this morning from someone who wanted Tamiflu. I know this is happening to other providers too. They are getting ready to go to California and they want it to just go ahead and take it and keep their child healthy," said Lataitis.

Lataitis said she wouldn't be filling the prescription but the state has such a limited supply already. She said her office and others need to keep their stock up in the event there is an outbreak.

University of Colorado at Denver epidemiologist Dr. James Todd said so far he sees no reason for the community to panic.

"We've done a few extra flu tests in the last day or two and we've had no cases that we thought looked like a new strain in the community," said Todd.

With that being said, Todd said there are a handful of nasty viruses floating around and making people very sick.

Lataitis said if your child is showing flu-like symptoms treat them as you normally would unless you have visited a country or state that has seen a confirmed case of the swine flu.

If you're concerned about the symptoms and are not part of that group, it's always a good idea to call your doctor.
