The goal of minimally invasive spinal surgery is to perform traditional surgical interventions in the spine in a safe and effective manner, while minimizing the trauma related to the surgical approach. Minimally invasive spinal surgery parallels similar advances by our surgical colleagues in arthroscopy and laparascopy. New methods of image guidance have also assisted in the advancement in minimally disruptive surgery. Minimal invasive surgery does not just involve small incisions, it involves minimal tissue disruption.
