Diet Doctor Challenges America To Lose 50 Million Pounds

814,000 People Have Signed Up For Weight-Loss Initiative

The doctor who helps celebrities shed weight is hoping to help Americans drop 50 million pounds.

Dr. Ian Smith may be best known of his book "Fat Smash Diet" or his role on Celebrity Fit Club, but he is also the man behind the 50 Million Pound Challenge.

More than 3,000 people in Colorado have signed up for the free weight-loss initiative. Since April 2007, they have lost more than 7,300 pounds.

Nationwide 850,000 have signed up, losing more than 3 million pounds.

State Farm Insurance sponsors the program, providing exercise and diet tips.

Participants can also keep track of their weight loss and get encouragement from other dieters
