Weight Loss Blog Week 4: Even Oprah Struggles

Oprah Hits 200 Pounds Again

Did you see this news this week? Oprah announced she's hit 200 pounds again. She was down to 160 pounds in 2006.

In the January issue of "O" magazine, Oprah said, "I'm embarrassed. I can't believe that after all these years, all the things I know how to do, I'm still talking about my weight."

Oprah admitted she gained the weight for the two reasons we all struggle with -- she started eating whatever she wanted and she developed a fear of working out. It's not a fear of working out that stops most of us, it's just time and commitment.

But even Oprah, who can afford personal trainers and personal chefs, struggles with exactly the same issues all of us struggle with: diet and working out.

Oprah says her goal is no longer to be thin. Instead, she wants to be strong, healthy and fit. That's my goal. Yes, I need to lose some weight, but I want to be strong, healthy and fit.

Oprah plans to start with her upcoming "Best Life Week," starting Jan. 5.

I say it's time to start now. Don't eat one last fatty, tasty meal. Don't say, "Oh, I'll start January 1st."

Start now! Make a committment to walk or do some other exercise at least three times a week. If you have health issues, call your doctor's office right now. Who cares what time it is? Leave a message asking what exercise is OK. I bet they say you can at least start walking.

Make a committment to walk 10 minutes tonight. After 10 minutes, ask yourself, can you do 5 more? Maybe you'll walk 15 minutes tonight. If it's too snowy, walk around your kitchen table. Just get some exercise. Work up to 20 minutes a day, then 30 minutes a day.

Look at what you're planning for dinner. Can you put half of your normal serving on your plate and the other half in the fridge for lunch tomorrow? Can you cut out dessert or just take one bite? Can you cut back on the butter and cheese?

I'm not suggesting major changes for you, I'm not making major changes myself, but I'm saying you have to get started.

If you're already working out, then how about an extra 15 minutes tonight? I'm going to do it. Can you?

I know I talked a lot about Oprah this week. Maybe because I had a bad week. I had good workouts for several days. Then on Wednesday I had two biopsies. The nurse told me not to work out for a couple days. Then I caught a plane and got stuck for hours because of mechanical problems. Instead of walking around the airport, I sat and read and felt sorry for myself.

So, it's time for me to recommit too. I promise tonight I will get back to cardio and weights.

And yes, the biopsy news was good; everything came back benign. But don't forget to get your mammograms if you are over 40.

I love the weekly e-mails I'm exchanging with some of you. Send me your goals at Deb Stanley (Deb_Stanley@kmgh.com) and I'll send you a weekly e-mail checking on your progress.
