A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens that sits inside the eye. It is like looking through a window that is frosted or yellowed. The amount of clouding can vary in severity. That is why some cataracts are more symptomatic than others.Symptoms include blurred vision, glare or light sensitivity and poor night vision.Cataracts occur as a result of normal aging of the eye. Family history, injuries and medical conditions like diabetes can also contribute.
A cataract is not a "film" over the eye. Nor is it caused by overuse. Cataracts cannot be spread from one eye to the other.Surgery is the only way to truly treat (remove) cataracts, but if they are not causing the patient a lot of trouble, they can be monitored or sometimes improved with a change in eyeglass prescription.Dr. Gary Jamell
