It can cost tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills for breast cancer patients going through treatment. Depending on each case, the treatments can last anywhere from six months to a year to even longer.

Oftentimes, the diagnosis catches women by surprise.

"I was perfectly healthy and was not even remotely something I was considering, going through a major illness," said breast cancer patient Robin Peak.

Peak was diagnosed with the disease in March. A week later, she lost her job.

"I actually was making six figures the year before. I went from six figures to zero income which was very, very scary," said Peak.

She went through some scary times of wondering how to make ends meet until she applied for financial assistance from "Sense of Security." It's a nonprofit organization to help give breast cancer patients undergoing treatment extra money to help pay for everyday expenses.

"Our mission is to ease the financial burden for patients while they're going through treatment by providing these basic financial services," said founder of "Sense and Security" Vicki Tosher.

"You want someone to come and rescue you and that's what Sense of Security is," said Peak.

Peak applied for the service and now receives an extra $500 a month to help her with her mortgage. It's money that's helped Peak survive during her treatment at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.

Sense of Security will have served its $100 millionth dollar before this year is over.
