DENVER -- The Colorado Department of Public Health announced on Tuesday that two more Coloradans have been infected with the West Nile virus, bringing the state's total number of human cases to 12.
One of those infected is a teenage girl from Washington County, in northeastern Colorado, who became ill on Sept. 4 with West Nile fever. She did not require hospitalization.
The second case involves a 35-year-old man from Jefferson County who became ill on Sept. 10 with West Nile fever. Both are recovering well and are expected to be fine.John Pape, a Department of Public Health and Environment epidemiologist who specializes in animal-related diseases and is leading the department's West Nile virus investigation, said these are expected to be the last human West Nile virus cases in Colorado this year. The West Nile virus season began drawing to a close in about mid-September as colder temperatures and shorter days began to arrive in the state, Pape said. He said that because of these changes, the female mosquitoes, which carry the disease, began to prepare for winter-long hibernation and switched from blood meals from animals and humans to nectar meals from plants. This year was the largest outbreak of West Nile since the virus first appeared in the country three years ago, 7NEWS reported.A total of 3,495 cases of West Nile virus were reported this year across the country, resulting in 204 deaths.
