New Campaign Seeks To Educate Men About Diabetes
Diabetes Can Affect Physical, Emotional And Sexual Health
A new campaign challenges men to adopt a more comprehensive approach to managing diabetes and improving their quality of life.More than 23 million Americans have diabetes, 12 million are men. That puts them at risk for heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation. The American Diabetes Association surveyed 1,000 men with type 2 diabetes and their spouses. An overwhelming number said they wanted more information, according to Dr. Richard M. Bergenstal, vice president of medicine & science at the American Diabetes Association
Men with diabetes are at greater risk for erectile dysfunction caused by nerve damage. They are twice as likely to have low testosterone, which can result in diminished interest in sex, reduced lean body mass, decreased bone mineral density and depressed mood and fatigue.Type 2 diabetes management involves monitoring the ABC's of diabetes, which include A1c (a measure of blood glucose), blood pressure and cholesterol.Diabetes suffers should make every effort to stay informed about other health conditions that can affect their physical, emotional and sexual health, according to Dr. BergenstalFor more information visit diabetes.org.
